If you’ve recently purchased a new ATV, you’ve likely already made plans to hit the nearest nature trail for an exciting off-roading adventure. However, if this is your first time traveling on a nature trail, you may not be aware of some of the unsaid rules or expectations that come with the ride. To make sure you’re fully prepared for your first ATV trail ride, be sure to read our helpful tips below.

Stay on the Path

When you first take your ATV out onto a trail, you’ll need to make sure that you follow it very closely. Not only will this ensure you don't end up traveling across terrain that’s too difficult for your skill level, but it should also help you avoid mistakenly trespassing onto someone else’s property. Staying close to the path also means you won’t harm any of the nearby wildlife or local ecosystems—just remember not to throw down any trash as you ride!

Give the Right of Way

If you encounter other people on the trail, be sure to give them the right of way. ATVs are expected to pull to the side for hikers, cyclists, and people on horseback. If horses are passing by, be sure not to rev your engine or make sudden movements, as you’re likely to startle the horse.  If you are passing someone in a riding group, be sure to have the leader of the pack signal to the yielding party how many people are in your group. This way they’ll know exactly how many vehicles need to pass by before they’re welcome to get back on the trail.
